Hello, I am not dead yet and have just recently rediscovered my love of complaining about stuff that I thought I would enjoy. It turns out it was in my other pair of pants. D'oh! Sorry if you missed me... but I sincerely doubt that there were any "you"s to do any missing. I am so looking forward to Children of Men that the anticipation is almost painful. Maybe I shall get to see it this weekend with a lady friend...

Sin City, god damn, what a movie. Not only was it an amazing movie experience, but it was prefaced by some very intriguing previews. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Star Wars Episode III, The Skeleton Key and War of the Worlds all seem to be quite good candidates for theater fare.

I'm back again with Netflix. It's now being utilized to catch up on broadcast and cable shows that I missed, such as Arrested Development. It was fucking hilarious. Gob is like the best character ever. Of course, because it's on Fox there's a strong chance it will be cut down. That's what Fox does. It's their business model!

As far as music, Metric, The Octopus Project, and Deltron 3030 are recent finds.

I am totally busting at the seams with indie cred.

I have not slacked on my reviewing of late, but I haven't been so good about providing blog like commentary. Well, I'm still watching a ton of movies as can be seen. Mostly through Netflix. I quit for a while but signed back up in pursuit of some hard to find series, initially anime. I'm nearing burnout again though, so the movie spree probably won't last too much longer.

I'm still reading a lot. I just finished up a PKD novel, Ubik. I may bother to write a review. Though it's quicker if I just say it was bland. Nothing special, but it was a quick read and reasonably diverting. I've read some comic book trades recently too. The Goon is a great new series. It reminds me of Hellboy, which I just reread.

I'm also listening to a fair amount of music. I recently purchased a flash-based mp3 player and it kicks ass. It's main purpose was to provide a aural shield from Cher while I'm in the gym. Who the fuck wants to listen to Cher while they workout nowadays?

So Christmas was good to me this year. I got a fair amount of stuff that is reviewable, so expect more critical rants in the near future. Among the list of possible candidates are:
America the book
Tetris for NES
Super Metroid for the SNES
Zelda for NES
You Shall Know Our Velocity! by Dave Eggers

I've also got some giftcards burning a hole in my pocket. I'm not sure what I'm going to buy just yet. I might get some new pants, but they're kind of hard to review. I'm sure I could use some more DVDs, some books, and maybe even a game or two.

I think this is the worst batch of previews I've seen in a long time. A couple of movies were interesting, like Collateral and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. On the other hand, it seems like I've seen previews for Sky Captain the past couple of years that I've been going to the movies. I'm pretty sure it's been pushed back several times. Bourne Supremacy will probably at least be worth a rental.

Then there are the "What the fuck were they thinking?" movies. Like Anacondas: Hunt for the Blood Orchid. I didn't realize that giant snake movies equalled box office gold. Catwoman looks like total shit. Bad CG and ripoff Matrix sequences, oh boy! And I'm not sure why any is going to give a shit about the life story of Howard Hughes in The Aviator. The dude was batshit crazy and a creep. I'm guessing that they'll gloss over that part.

Commercials before the previews continue to piss me off. Especially when they show scenes from the movie that I'm about to watch. Bastards.

I'm hitting my stride with Netflix. My queue has a decent mix of new and classic stuff. I still haven't gotten around to watching a movie in a theater for quite some time though. Looking at my last update, it seemed like I was having the same problem over a month ago. It's not I don't want to watch them, but I'm already watching 3 movies a week with Netflix. Anymore seems like it would be a bit much. I'm slowly making my way through the Gormenghast novels. I like them but I'm hard pressed to say why I do.
In other news, I wish to god I had used sunscreen during softball practice. I think my eyes are sunburned. Uh, not that I could have put sunscreen on them, but still.

I've been provided with a nice space to write updates and whatnot, so I suppose I should use it. There are a lot of movies out in the theater right now that I'm interested in seeing. On the other hand, I don't know if the interest is strong enough to dislodge me from my apathy. Also, I've got a bunch of movies to watch now that I joined Netflix. I'll still probably get around to watching Hellboy and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind though. As far as reading goes, I just finished up A Fan's Notes by Exley. It was good, but not the kind of thing I'd review. I'm currently slowly making my way through Generation X by Douglas Coupland. I haven't played any videogames in close to a month. I'll get back into them before too long. I always do.

So I finally managed to kick the book streak with a movie. It was very mediocre, but it was a movie nonetheless. I feel like I should get off my ass and review a game before too long but that would actually involve picking up a game and bothering to play all the way through it. I don't know if I have the attention span for that right now.
It seems like there's shit in the theaters right now. I'm vaguely interested in Club Dread, but I don't know if I'd want to pay 5 bucks (student discount) to see it. That's right folks, you can use your student discount long after you graduate as long as you scrape off anything that gives away your graduation date. Also, people that work minimum wage are usually piss poor guardians of their employer's interests.

So, I finally managed to read something that I could write a review for. Before AHWOSG I read a science fiction anthology, filled with the year's best short stories of 2003. Apparently 2003 was a lean year for science fiction.
Anyway, I've watched several movies over the past week as well. There's Grosse Pointe Blank, which is certainly worth watching and Rules of Attraction, which has me a bit conflicted.

( I'm slapping two updates together. So if they don't make sense together.. - Anj Kay)

Continuing the college theme started a couple of weeks ago with Kicking and Screaming, here's a review of Rules of Attraction.

I'm not sure why I find college movies so interesting still. Maybe it's because I don't feel that I took much advantage of my time in college. I never bothered to experiment with all sorts of things and I didn't work my ass off either. I spent a lot of my time honing my Quake and Starcraft skills. Sure, these are important, but I don't think they've helped me grow so much as a person or help pad out my resume. Then again, I also didn't pick up any STD's and most of my braincells survived intact, so I suppose I made out ok.

So, I've watched quite a few movies lately. Most of my reviews for the foreseeable future will be movie related. It's not that I've stopped reading or playing computer games, it's just that I haven't found any that really compell me to write a review. I'm currently playing Rise of Nations on the PC and Guilty Gear XX on PS2. Both are quite fun but I've been playing them off and on for a while, so I don't feel a strong urge to write them up.
I saw Return of the King last week. It was decent but would have benefited from some harsher editing I think. I really don't give a shit about what the hobbits are back up to in hobbitland, it kills the mood and is too far removed from the climax. Currently I'm looking forward to Big Fish, Troy and Hellboy. Big Fish is out right now and I'll probably catch it this weekend. I've heard good things about it.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die." This is an excellent quote and quite fitting because today I’ve gone ahead and written up my impressions of Homeworld 2.

I also did a lot of movie watching this weekend. I hit paydirt with Lost in Translation but got the shaft with Mystic River.
Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

13-10-03

Hobbits, Vengeful ex-husbands, and renegade humanitarians oh my!

This was a great weekend for movie watching. Not only was Kill Bill a blast but the previews were also quite entertaining. The marquee preview, so to speak, would of course be Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. There were also a couple of other movies that caught my interest. The Human Stain looks to be a who’s who of actors, counting Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, and Gary Sinise among its cast. The story may suck though, but I’m going to watch it anyway. The last one, Beyond Borders, features Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen. It’s going to be a globe trotting love story with explosions and stuff, probably a date movie, but it should be an entertaining flick if Clive Owen gets a lot of screentime. I highly recommend his movies, except uh, maybe the videogame, Privateer 2: The Darkening. Although that was a kickass game.

So anyway, 2003 is going to finish with a blast in the theaters. I guess Matrix Revolutions is coming out pretty soon as well, but I have a hard time getting excited about plodding, pseudo-religious bullshit.

Did I mention hobbits already?

Added, again obviously: Kill Bill Vol. 1
