Islands - Return to the Sea
I was late to the party with the Unicorns. Nearly two years ago I was listening to an internet radio station and "Jellybones" came on. I was hooked. Not having anywhere to buy the CD I was spoon fed a few tracks by someone awesome (thanks, Tom!) but it took a trip to Canada and back to actually get the album in my grubby mits. It's still one of my most listened to CDs because it's the one band that I listen to that my girlfriend likes too. They're that good that they break barriers and make her blurt out "jelly jelly jelly jelly jelly jelly jelly jelly boo-ooo-ooones." It was obviously a sad, sad day when I heard that they split up, because you can't really end after having released "The Unicorns: 2014," which is a pretty bad way to go. To say it wasn't their best is a bit generous.
So when a pop collaboration splits up you expect one half to make one kind and one the other. So say the Unicorns was a hawaian pizza. One half ham and one delicious pineapple. Hawaii splits up and you expect one side to take the ham and one the delicious pineapple. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Unicorns was catchy and awesome. So music made by one unicorn, say a horse, would either be catchy or awesome.
Which is it?
Hint: both!
The songs on the album retain the eclectic and completley random themes like Swans, Bones and Volcanoes. Totally random, but the melodies surrounding the weirdness just make you bob back and forth and have you singing along after a nanosecond.
Highlights: 'Humans,' 'Don't call me Whitney, Bobby,' and 'Where there's a Will (There's a whalebone).'
So I guess, in shorter, what this Islands album is is the third Unicorns album, just a little bit edgier and less high-octane gay pop.
In shorter still: Pretty awesome!
